11th Annual Smoke on the Plains Derby BBQ & Music Fest set for June 10 & 11

Smoke on the Plains BBQ and Music Fest

Mark your calendars for June 10 & 11 for the 11th Annual Smoke on the Plains Derby BBQ & Music Festival presented by Rock Regional Hospital. This fun and free event will be held at High Park, 2801 E. James St.

There will be a full slate of activities at this year’s event with the return of the People’s Choice Tasting Contest and Kids Corner activities. There will not be a carnival this year. 

The Derby Public Library will hold a medallion hunt starting Monday, June 6. Look for clues on their website, DerbyLibrary.com, and Facebook page, @DerbyLibrary. The winner will receive a $100 gift card and a BBQ prize package. 

Schedule of events
Friday, June 10, 6 to 10 p.m.

  • Creekstone Farms People’s Choice Tasting Contest 
    • Buy a $5 tasting kit to try six two ounce samples of competition pulled pork
  • Live music by the Silver Bullet Band, a country rock band out of Kansas City
    • 7 to 10 p.m. on the Security 1st Title Mainstage
  • Derby Recreation Commission Toss Like a Boss Cornhole Tournament – Register at DerbyRec.com
  • Food trucks
    • Big Granny’s, Kona Ice, Mook’s, Snack Shack, Squat & Gobble, Taters N Toppings, Twisted Hog BBQ
  • Derby Noon Lions Club Beverage & Beer Garden and Shaken or Stirred Bartending

Saturday, June 11
We will hold the Creekstone Farms Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) Cook-off for professional teams and the Scholfield Honda Backyard BBQ Cook-off for aspiring pitmasters. We will also hold the Creekstone Farms Steak Cook-off Association (SCA) Steak Contest (double contest). Professional teams and the public are encouraged to compete in the steak cookoff. SCA membership is not required. Learn more and register at DerbyBBQ.com. Deadline for team registration is May 20. 

June 11: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • 9 to 11 a.m.: Bloody Marys & Mimosas with breakfast food options and live music
  • 9 to 11 a.m.: Harrison Steele performs on the Security 1st Title Mainstage
  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Smile Safari and Derby Orthodontics/Trimmell Anders and White Orthodontics Kids Corner on the east side of the pond. Activities include inflatables, princesses, face painting, Beauties and Beasts animal rescue and more. 
  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Food Trucks
    • Big Granny’s, Kona Ice, Mook’s, Snack Shack, Squat & Gobble, Taters N Toppings, Twisted Hog BBQ
  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Patz performs on the Security 1st Title Mainstage
  • 1 to 2:30 p.m.: Whitnie Means performs on the Security 1st Title Mainstage

     There will be a break in scheduled activities at the park from 3 to 6 p.m.

June 11: 6 to 10 p.m.

  • Live music by Paramount, an 80s cover band from Salina
    • 7 to 10 p.m. on the Security 1st Title Mainstage
  • Axe throwing with Tomahawk Mobile Axe Throwing
  • Food trucks
    • Big Granny’s, Kona Ice, Mook’s, Snack Shack, Squat & Gobble, Taters N Toppings, Twisted Hog BBQ
  • Derby Noon Lions Club Beer & Beverage Garden and Shaken or Stirred Bartending
  • 80s Night Big Hair Contest sponsored by The Butcher Shop Salon. Get there by 7 p.m. with your hair teased and hair sprayed. Judging will take place at 8 p.m. The winner will receive a prize package from The Butcher Shop Salon and bragging rights. 

Enter High Park using the James St. entrance. On-site parking will be available in the paved lots and grass parking will be available during the day on June 11 (accessible from Madison Ave.). An ADA only parking lot will be available just north of the Zimmerman Family Shelter. Look for signage when you arrive at the park. 

Proceeds from this event benefit the McConnell Air Force Base Airman and Family Readiness Center. The City of Derby has donated $16,000 of proceeds from this event to the center over the last 10 years.
