Residential Trash Services
The City of Derby has an exclusive contract with Waste Connections, Inc. (WCI) to provide residential trash and recycling services. Trash is collected weekly and recycling is collected biweekly.
Collections
Residential refuse and recycling should be placed in the appropriate carts. Additional, appropriately bagged trash may be placed to the side of the cart. Up to 10 extra bags are included with pricing for a 95-gallon trash cart. Customers using 35- or 65-gallon carts will be charged an additional $1.50/bag for refuse placed for collection outside of the trash cart. Customers using 95-gallon trash carts will be charged an additional $1.50/bag for extra bags beyond the first 10.
WCI is not obligated to collect materials that contain or are believed to contain radioactive, volatile, corrosive, highly flammable, explosive, biomedical, infectious, biohazardous, toxic or other hazardous material, as defined by applicable federal, state or local laws or regulations.
Payment
WCI bills customers directly for residential services three months in advance. Bills will be mailed on or before the 15th day of the month preceding the billing period (for example, by March 15 for the billing period of April, May and June). Your bill is due no later than the 10th day of the first month (for example, on April 10). If payment is not received by WCI by the last day of the first month (for example, April 30), the bill will become delinquent and service will be suspended until payment is received. Carts picked up for non-payment or cancellation will be subject to a $25 charge for pickup and a $25 charge for redelivery.
Missed Pickups
Missed pickups should be reported to WCI by calling 838-4920, emailing at customerservice5025@wasteconnections.com, or via the WasteConnect App. WCI will return to pick up your trash the same day or following day if WCI is at fault. All missed pickup complaints will be resolved within two business days of the time they are reported.
Cart Use
Carts and equipment supplied by WCI remains the property of WCI, but under the care, custody and control of the customer. Carts are designed for residential trash and should not be overloaded or filled with overly heavy items.
Recycling carts should only be used for appropriate recyclable materials. Customers who contaminate recycling carts will receive two warning notices and then the cart will be removed and the customer will be charged a $25 removal fee.
Carryout Service
Residential customers who are not able-bodied or are age 65 and older and have no able-bodied person residing in their household may receive carryout services for weekly trash and biweekly recycling. Customers may certify their eligibility for these services by taking their driver's license to City Hall, 611 N. Mulberry, Monday through Thursday (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) or Friday (7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). City staff will send verification to WCI.
Changes to Collections
WCI may not change regularly scheduled collection days for customers without the City's approval. Customers will receive notice of any changes in regularly scheduled collection days prior to changes being implemented.
In the event of uncontrollable circumstances, WCI may coordinate revised collection times with the City. This may include hazardous winter weather as well as extreme heat conditions, during which the City may approve collection beginning as early as 5 a.m. Platforms such as the WasteConnect App and City social media will be used to notify customers.
