Election Information

What you need to know about elections in Derby:
  • Elections are held in odd-numbered years and are non-partisan (no declaration of a political party is needed)..
  • The Primary Election is held on the first Tuesday in August. Primaries would only occur if more than three people file for mayor or for any given ward.
  • General Elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
  • Each ward has two Council Members who are selected for four-year terms. Candidates must live in the ward they are running for. See map
  • Council Member terms are staggered. One Council Member from each ward will be elected at one election, with the other Council Member from that ward elected at the succeeding election two years later. 
  • The position of Mayor is a four-year term and is elected at large (not ward based)
Thinking about running for City Council?
  • Candidates who are interested in running must file at the Sedgwick County Election Office.
  • Candidates can either file by fee ($20) or get a nomination petition with 25 qualified signatures from their Council ward.
  • A candidate for Mayor can file by fee ($20) or get 50 qualified signatures on a nomination petition.
  • City officials elected in November will be sworn in at their first January meeting.
