Community Christmas Activities

Holiday Lights Tour and Contest

Since our holiday season will look different this year, new festive community activities are planned for you and your family to enjoy.

Holiday Lights Tour & Contest: Dec. 4-24
The City of Derby is holding a Holiday Lights Tour & Contest in December. Plan now to create the best display and win a prize!

You may participate in the tour only or the tour and contest. We invite residents and businesses to participate. Decorate your yard, house, business or storefront. Judges will pick their favorite displays, and the public will vote for the People’s Choice prize on Facebook.

Entry deadline is Nov. 30. Anyone who lives in the Derby city limits or owns a business in the city limits is eligible to participate. Sign up at DerbyKS.com/holidaylights. It’s free!

Five categories: traditional, most creative, professionally installed, business/shopping center, and neighborhood (HOA/neighborhood street).

Questions? Email info@derbyweb.com or call 788-1519 ext. 1232.

Drive-Thru Christmas: Dec. 12, 6-8 p.m.
Pile your family in the car for a night of treats and holiday lights. We will hand out treats and a map of the Holiday Lights Tour as you drive through Derby Fire Station 81 at 715 E. Madison Ave. Give a big wave to Santa Claus and say hi to your Derby firefighters. You might even see a few of your favorite Derby mascots there.

Please enter Bulldog Drive (west side of the fire station) from eastbound Madison Ave. Left-hand turns will not be allowed. We hope to see you there!

Derby Recreation Center
Activities include Calls from Santa, art classes (create a Ceramic Christmas tree), holiday-themed cooking classes (fudge, cookies, yule log), date night drop-in daycare so parents can shop for Christmas, and more. Visit DerbyRec.com for a full listing of events.

Derby Public Library

Here are a few activities taking place at the library:

  • Letters to Santa: Pick up a letter template and return to the library. Children will receive a letter back from Santa.
  • Elf on the Shelf daily adventures and stocking giveaway
  • Visit the Library’s Facebook page for stories with Santa and other special guests! Plus, a special reading of ‘The Night Before Christmas’ on Christmas Eve.
