Applications Open for Planning Commission

The community needs your help to guide Derby’s future. Derby has a volunteer opening on the Planning Commission. Applications are available at DerbyKS.com/boards and are due August 20.

The Derby Planning Commission meets on the first and third Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Derby City Hall. Members receive a packet of information several days in advance of each meeting to read and prepare to vote on zoning changes, commercial site plans, subdivision regulations, and other matters that help shape the built environment of the city and in so doing support transportation, accessibility, walkability, and diverse housing to meet changing needs.

On July 23, Mitch Mencacci submitted his resignation from the Planning Commission due to a change in his schedule that rendered him no longer able to attend meetings. His service since May 2018 was much appreciated. The resulting vacancy will be filled by appointment by Mayor Randy White with the consent of the City Council. The term of Mencacci’s position ends in April 2021. Thereafter, the incumbent would be eligible to serve a full three-year term.

As with any decision-making board, the Derby Planning Commission functions best when it comprises citizens representing the diversity of the community. Derby citizens who are women or members of minority racial/ethnic groups would be most welcome to apply. Age diversity on the current commission is well balanced, but only two of ten members are women.

“We have a good balance of professional diversity on the current commission,” said Scott Knebel, City Planner. “The most important qualifications are the ability to ask sincere questions in a respectful manner and the desire to continue to make Derby a welcoming and accessible community.”

Find an application at DerbyKS.com/boards or at City Hall (M-Th 7:30-5:30; F 7:30-1:00). Contact Ariana with questions at ArianaDavis@derbyweb.com or 788-3132.
