Free Mulch Available & Storm Cleanup Update

Chip Site

It has been a week since a strong wind storm came through Derby on June 23, resulting in many downed tree limbs and uprooted mature trees. Free mulch is now available to area residents and businesses, regardless of whether they live or are located in Derby. Please bring tools to load the mulch into your truck or trailer. You must live in the Derby city limits to dispose of tree limbs at the site.

Here is a breakdown of how the City of Derby’s Chip Site was used over the past week:

June 23: 3,000 loads
June 24: 1,426 loads
June 25: 1,198 loads
June 26: 401 loads
June 27: 353 loads
June 28: 322 loads
June 29: 366 loads
Total: 7,066 loads of tree debris

For those who still need to dispose of tree limbs, the Chip Site is open Mon.-Fri. from 7:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. The Chip Site will be closed all day on Thursday, July 4 so crews can prepare for the annual Fireworks in the Park event.

We accept tree limbs up to 10 inches in diameter. We do not accept grass clippings, leaves, thorny brush, construction debris or trash. You must live in the Derby city limits to dispose of tree limbs at the site.

Other Updates
Hand Park is open for public use. Crane Park will be closed for a few weeks due to extensive tree damage in the park and the creek.

If there are volunteers willing to help residents cut up and/or haul tree waste, please call United Way’s 211 to register as a volunteer. If you are seeking assistance with your tree debris removal, you may also call 211 to see what resources are available.

“Safety continues to be of concern as many trees have loose limbs that have not yet fallen, and some trees have damage to the trunk but have not yet fallen over,” said Kathy Sexton, Derby City Manager. “It’s best to exercise caution when near trees, examine your trees for damage and call a tree professional for assistance.”
