Walkable Development Plan Open House: Nov. 28

Walkable Derby

The City of Derby, in conjunction with the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, is launching its process to create a Walkable Development Plan that will facilitate ways to reduce dependence on automobiles by reducing barriers and creating opportunities for active transportation. The public is invited to attend a public kick-off open house event, where they can hear about the project, learn what “walkable” means, and contribute their ideas to make active transportation easier in Derby.

The public kick-off open house will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at The Pavilion at Madison Avenue Central Park, 512 E. Madison Ave. There will be a short presentation given with an overview of the project at the beginning and the rest of the time will be an informal open house setting designed to gain feedback and to talk through issues, opportunities, and ideas with City staff, the consultant team, and neighbors.

The feedback the City gains from the public will help determine what needs and desires exist to reduce the reliance on automobiles, promote safe, enjoyable, and convenient transportation options for all roadway users, provide sidewalk connections and streetscape amenities that promote multi-modal transportation, and find ways to reduce the number of vehicle trips.

Public participation and engagement is encouraged.Comment forms will be available at the event as well as an online survey available at after the open house to gather feedback from meeting attendees and those who cannot attend.

It is imperative that the City of Derby Walkable Development Plan reflects the desires of residents, businesses, and visitors to the area. This first of three public open houses will kick off public engagement activities over the next six to nine months. The public can visit or the City of Derby website at for project updates and meeting announcements.
