Derby is outdoing itself this holiday season. Our event count for the weekend of December 1-3 is more than 10 events. From craft fairs and breakfast with Santa to carriage rides in the park, your family is sure to find something fun to do in Derby.
Our community has a high demand for family-friendly, affordable events around the holidays. The great thing is that many organizations in the community help fill this need. A big “thank you” to Derby churches, Derby Recreation Commission, business owners, Derby Public Library, our Derby VFW and American Legion posts, Derby Public Schools, Derby Historical Museum, Kansas Grown Farmers Market, and many community members and volunteers. I may be missing a few, but please know you are all appreciated!
Find a complete list of holiday events at derbyks.com/holiday. A popular event is back this year – the Christmas Parade hosted by the Derby VFW and American Legion. It’s scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m.
The parade starts at Derby Middle School (Madison & Woodlawn), proceeds west on Madison to Georgie, south on Georgie to Market and east on Market back to the middle school. If you are interested in participating, email firstname.lastname@example.org or contact Jay Boyle at 761-3617. The deadline to sign up is Dec. 1.
Special thanks to all those who came to the tree lighting on Nov. 16 at Madison Avenue Central Park. I hope you enjoyed the lighting of the tree, visiting with Santa, and welcoming “T” the T-Rex to her new home at Field Station Dinosaurs, which will open in Derby next summer.
Special thanks to the volunteers and donors to Derby Operation Holiday and other community efforts to ensure a brighter holiday for those in need of a helping hand. More than fun events, these efforts truly represent the spirit of the season and make Derby a special place.
The Derby City Council and I are proud of our community and the people who live here. We wish you a safe and happy holiday season.
